Dual Side Ajrakh Patchwork Hand Block Printed Cotton Quilt with Kantha Work 4
In Kutch, years before a woman marries, her mother begins sewing quilts, called dhadki for her to take to her new home. Some quilts are intricately patterned in bright colours, while others are simpler, for everyday use, crafted out of old textiles. To make a quilt, fabrics are cut into shapes and stitched after which they might be sandwiched with cotton wadding. They are sewn with fine running stitches in a concentric pattern, with embellishments. The quilts are used to soften long seats, on top of mud cots and to snuggle under in the cold. When not in use, they occupy a special place in every home on a wooden raised table, of knee height, made of insect repellent limda wood, called Manjhi.
This fabric on this quilt has been hand block printed by master artisans and needle work has been done by women of Kutch.
